the Quantum Field

the Quantum Field One of Michelangelo Mangano‘s lectures described how delivering kicks to a proton dislodges gluons from their otherwise invisible lives. Please note the ISR (Initial State Radiation) in this painting, which was also inspired by the quantum field theorists’ success in doing away with all those nice little Greek-style “atoms”; apparently, reality is now made up of identity-less “excitations” of some fundamental “stuff”.

In other words: Pending the repair of the LHC, some of the less immediately useful members of the collaboration (a.k.a. yours truly) has reverted to armchair philosophy and the occasional excursion into physics.

Or… not really. Do tell the boss that this blogger still remains:

  • a graduate student of UCSB
  • working hard (ahem) on triggers / dataset definitions plus whatnot
  • getting a Beyond Standard Model search ready for launch
  • (incidentally?) setting up groundwork for thesis

Thanks for the news Sue Ann, and may you get into the fun again soon.

I once heard an eloquent old Hindu disproof of the Greek atom idea. Basically, that such a structuring does not necessitate or result in space as all greek atoms could be locationally identical on account of their zero-magnitude (the greek idea) in all directions.

I’m a mystic, and most kinds of philosopher (except, unfortunately, “armchair”) and find a crossover interest with the expressions coming from science lately. That’s why I’m interested in this experimentation.

While we wait for the switch on, then, let us contemplate the ultimate nature of whatever that-which-underlies (substance) is.

I like this idea of fundamentally excited stuff… resonance of the fundamental playful energy of existence “Leela”, which gives animation and apparent polarity to the indivisibility of oneness.

In this time of (I gather) your crushingly hard yet dedicated labour, may you and your valiant co-workers find time to directly experience the playfulness that is undeniably an observable quality in existence.
