Learning a little German couldn’t hurt

dishwasher

With all the encouragement I give others to learn French before they, you know, move to France, I’ve forgotten to mention that you’ll often encounter appliances with German on them. I don’t know what they’re doing here in France, maybe they’re cheap.

All I know is, we just set the dishwasher to “Universal Plus” and let it do its thing.  I’ll have to see if WordReference can tell me what KALT VORSPÜLEN is…

  1. Andree R-Veronneau says:

    It means Cold (Kalt) pre(vor)-rinse(spülen). I recommend dict.leo.org as a translation tool for German.

  2. Emanuel says:

    I was about to suggest the same thing :) That website has never failed me, even back in secondary school when I used it for my German class (for assignments like translating a random news clipping).

  3. josch says:

    If it is a Miele (I think they have the “Universal Plus” named programmes, but maybe others too), you can try to find the User Manual here:
    http://miele.com/manuals/display_manuals.asp?nav=400&snav=455&tnav=460&oT=224&menu_id=61
    or older models in their archive:
    http://miele.com/manuals/search_manuals.asp?nav=400&snav=455&tnav=460&oT=225

    BTW, Miele products are not cheap ;-)

  4. German says:

    Programm = Program
    Kalt vorspuelen = pre-rinse with cold water
    Spar = Economy
    Reinigen = Clean
    Zwischenspuelen = intermediate stage rinse
    Klarspuelen = rinse clear (i.e. final rinse)
    Trocknen = dry
    Ende = end
    Aus = off
    Temperatur = Temperature

    Yeah I definitely meant “cheap” in the way of “less expensive to buy” rather than “poorly made.” This dishwasher has served us well!
