James Doherty

Hello! I’m James - an Oxford-based mature Irish student studying physical sciences with the Open University (OU). I have secured a place on the CERN Student Summer Programme 2013 and will be blogging about my experiences throughout the summer in an open, honest and light-hearted way.

I have spent much of the last decade being a lawyer but am now a physicist in the making. I studied law at Cambridge and Oxford before going on to qualify as a solicitor at a big law firm in the City of London where I practiced for four years. However billing targets, late nights and cold takeaway got old so I altered my career path.

Science, especially physics, has long been my passion. Having studied science at school I missed it dearly and decided to take the plunge to study physics at degree level. I am now halfway through my degree with the OU and enjoying it enormously.

Outside physics I have many interests including singing in a funk band, composing music, salsa dancing, cycling and Capoeira. Being an Irishman I also enjoy the occasional tipple and a bit of craic.
